I was a friend of Lew, many years ago, It is sad to hear that Ann, Has passed away. A very nice gracious lady.

Another great friend of Lewis, Who has also passed on Eric Robinson, They used to train together at the Herculean barbell club.

Always the gentleman Lewis, His former trainer and mentor Bill Miller, Who was a great asset to Lewis, Died outside the club after a training session.

Apart from being one of best UK athletes, Lewis, was well versed in poetry also. A truly great guy and a credit to Derby and his country.

I am proud to have known Lewis, a great emessary for British sport. I remember visit to Madame Tussauds, London, Low and behold, I stood next to an effigy of Lewis. I think at the time I was with another guy who trained at the club with Lew, Brian (Butch) Cliff. We all had admiration for Lewis, Most certainly never racial prejudice. It is a true fact alas, There is always an element of ignorance to other culture's world-wide There was a family in the old west end, They must be one of if not the first mixed race to reside in Derby, A very nice family by the surname Benjamin, One of the younger sons was in the army at the same time as myself. I always remember how smart he was in his uniform, As I recall his first name Herbert. They were all very well mannered. They had a large house in Bridge Street. They were a part of the west end community, And very well thought of.
