New Year celebrations of days gone by

Jump to: navigation, search

The wonderful photograph above was taken at a New Year’s Day children’s party at the Majestic cinema in 1957.

Presumably it was for all the youngsters who belonged to the Saturday club and attended the Saturday matinees.

Do you remember the party? Were you there? Can you tell us any more about it? What film were the children treated to?

The other picture, below left, shows members of Derby Theatre in the Round singing Auld Lang Syne at a New Year Party.

The song, literally meaning “old long since”, was written by Robert Burns, who sent a copy to the Scots Musical Museum with the remark:

“The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man’s singing, is enough to recommend any air.”

Do you recognise anyone in the picture? Can you tell us more about the group? Where did they perform? Did you ever attend a Theatre in the Round show?
