A woman carrying a roll of blackout paper as she walks along a street in Derby at the start of World War Two in September 1939. From the beginning of the war, the authorities ordered lights to be blacked out to stop the Germans bombing our towns and cities at night. The fear was that a light even from one house would be used as a target by an enemy plane to drop its bombs. Each night everyone had to make sure that there was no light showing from the windows and doors of their homes. Heavy curtains or blinds were used to block out any illumination but some windows were simply painted over or covered with cardboard or thick paper for the duration of the war.
