Horace Peter Bailey - Derby Rail Worker Was England Football International
HORACE PETER BAILEY was one of the select group of men born in Derbyshire to play football for England.
He was born in Derby on 3 July 1881. He was a goalkeeper who began his career in 1899 with Derby County reserves and subsequently played for Crich, Ripley Athletic, Leicester Imperial and Leicester Fosse before rejoining Derby County in 1909-10 when he played his only 3 League games for them.
He finished his career with spells at Stoke and Birmingham. Although a good 'keeper', a number of disasters befell him, not least when he was on the wrong end of a 12-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest when in goal for Leicester Fosse.
He played most of his career as an amateur and won a gold medal for Great Britain in the 1908 Olympic Games football tournament. He was an England amateur international (8 caps) and played for the full England side 5 times in all.
He worked as a rating official with the Midland Railway and played lawn tennis for Derbyshire. Horace Bailey died in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, on 1 August 1960, aged 78.
